PCT 15: Of Rain, Mushrooms and Goats

On January 27, 2020January 27, 2020 By Daniel WambaughIn UncategorizedLeave a comment

Our merry group of three headed out after resupplying in Trout Lake. The trail started out in a large burn and there were dead branches and snagged trees everywhere forcing us to keep an eye on the ground and the things above us. Tragedy had struck days before for a German hiker who had sadly …

PCT 14: Goodbye Oregon, Hello Washington

Town and I worked our way around Mt Hood, zooming past many hikers doing the Timberline Trail. Backpacking season was in full swing and it felt veritably crowded since we were passing through the Timberline Lodge area on a Saturday. The trail wound up and down following the contours of the volcano looming above us. …

Some more snowy forays on surprisingly quiet snowmobile tracks and Tumalo laps.
Heidi and I got out for a xc ski with two old friends Sam, Tyler and their newborn, Clair! It was so nice to socialize, explore and generally have a grand old time outside. The ice was about as cruddy as it gets and our little cut across country was super bush wacky and awkward but it made for allot of fun and I wouldn't have it any other way! Thank you for the company and I hope we can all meet up again soon!
We celebrated Heidi's first three day weekend in several months by heading a little further afield than our usual quick xc ski locations. Love you a ton Heidi and thank you, as always, for being such a fantastic adventure partner!
For a fantastic Central Oregon Powder day Heidi and I joined my dad for a couple laps of back country. The conditions were too stormy to hit the summit of anything but the tree skiing was fantastic.
Since the snow is lacking we went for a day hike up Black Butte. It felt good to use some hiking muscles we haven't used in the last few months. The trail was shockingly quiet considering how busy everything feels these days but we had accidentally started at a lower trailhead and we quickly arrived to the point most people hiked from. With the clear skies we could see all the way to Mt Adams in Washington. Heading back to the car I was yearning for having a backpack on my back loaded and ready to go. I so badly wanted to stay walking through the woods for days on end but it is still January and hopefully these lackluster winters will have a few more good storms yet.
Family day on Tumalo! It was great to go up for a solid skin on Tumalo to enjoy some powder with Ruben and dad. The snow was a little heavy but the tree skiing was still allot of fun!
Another great day of ski touring up Tumalo from a less frequented aspect. The weather window was perfect for a few blue bird laps before the weather returned adding more snow and wind.
Hoping these storms will bring more snow and less ice over the next week!
The skiing was terrible and crusty, but the scenery was gorgeous, as always.
